I've met a girl - Drew - 12-04-2013

Some of you may remember that my wife passed away this past January after 5+ years of battling ovarian cancer. When we knew the end was coming, on more than one occasion during our bedside chats she looked me straight in the eye and insisted that I find another wife. She did not want me to feel guilty because of her, because she knew that I would be basically worthless by myself. More than that, she knows I need help with our special needs daughter as well as the other two kids.

I had zero interest in those kinds of things after she died, just tried to stay the course. Odd circumstances led to a couple of "dates" (coffee/dinner) with a couple of nice ladies. Those were pleasant enough, but nothing more than that. Then I met another woman a few months ago. She lives far away, so we mainly email, text, and Facetime. I met her once last month and will go again to see her this weekend. Don't know for sure, but it's not hard to imagine a future with her.

One year ago my life was incredibly stressful. My wife wanted to die at home, so I was busy taking care of her. We were married for 36 years and I couldn't imagine life without her. But, because of her love for me and our family, I've been able to move on, never forgetting my precious memories, but not living in the past.

Not sure why I'm posting this, but some of you know me a bit and many reached out to me in my difficult time last year. I guess I just want to report that life is going well!

Thanks for listening.

I can attest that happiness can--and does--arrive in unexpected ways from unexpected encounters. I hope it works out for you, Drew.

"You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." - Wayne Gretzky

One of my favorite, albeit cliche, sayings!

Big hockey fan, but this isn't about hockey its about the risk of finding happiness.

Thanks for your openness.

Glad to hear it Drew.

No matter what happens now, you have made the first step. The next one is always easier. It is sometimes hard to think about, but life does march on.

Humans need other humans. Your loss was devastating but humans have great power of recovery-indeed, it's one reason we are successful as a species as death is a part of life...
I'm glad you are able to find companionship and move on. I really hope it works out for you!
And I mean no disrespect over the loss of your wife of 36 years. I actually don't know what I'd do if I lost mine... You sound stronger than I think I'd ever be.

Also, your subject reminded of the line in Good Will Hunting, which sucked me in again the other night.
