My Daughter is Donating a Kidney - RoadToad - 12-04-2013

I'm so proud of her. She's donating to her sister's longtime boyfriend who has been on dialysis and the kidney waiting list for over a year.

Does anyone here have any experience with organ donation and the healing time/process? My daughter has not been a hospital patient since her birth. Coincidentally, she's donating on Dec 19, her 36th birthday!

I'm sure it's not an outpatient procedure. I can't offer much more than that.

What a wonderful thing she is doing!!! Please let us know how it goes on the 19th.

No personal experience, but an acquaintance recently went through the process (daughter donated to her dad.) The recovery time for both was ASTOUNDING. Both were up and walking that evening. The donor was out of the hospital within 48 hours; the recipient stayed 4 nights IIRC. Donor was able to resume driving and fairly normal activity within a couple weeks. She did not complain of any real pain, just fatigue that lasted quite a while.

Both procedures were done laproscopically so I'm sure that makes a big difference in the quick recovery time and easy pain management.

Wishing them both the best for a successful procedure and a speedy recovery!

Best wishes and hoping it goes well for both of them.

My Mother in Law received my Sister In Law's (her other daughter) Boyfriend's kidney! He was up and about in a couple days, back at work in a week. She was up and about in less than a week!

Wow, what an unselfish thing she is doing.
Best of luck to her and the recipient.

They make you get up and walk within hours of the surgery and kick you out of the hospital in a hurry, but the pain continues for quite awhile. Weeks or even a few months. It's not the most horrific surgery, and the scar shouldn't be too big or ugly with modern techniques (it would cross the whole abdomen a few years ago), but it's not the cakewalk some people will say that it is.

Your kid is doing a very good thing.

Wow, RoadToad, your daughter is very brave. My guess she was raised
with a strong diet of morals and a healthy dose of ethics. You have good
reason to be proud.
As dmann said, please keep us informed.
