Debate over Dallas Safari Club auctioning black rhino hunting permit - haikuman - 01-11-2014
Let's cut to the chase. This is after all coming out of Texas. IMHO their action/misnomered
a hunt, is a sadistically conceived approach to conservation.

Dallas, Texas (CNN) --" On Saturday night, a group of wealthy hunters will gather inside the Dallas Convention Center to bid on the rare chance to hunt one of the world's most endangered animals in Namibia.
The Dallas Safari Club is sponsoring the auction and says, as surprising as it might sound, that it's being done in the name of conservation, to save the threatened black rhinoceros. The permit is expected to fetch between $250,000 and $1 million, and all proceeds will be donated to the Namibian government and will be earmarked for conservation efforts, club officials say.
Animal conservationists estimate there are only about 5,000 black rhinos in the world, 1,700 of which are in the southern Africa nation of Namibia. They are considered a "critically endangered species" by wildlife organizations around the world.
"This is the best way to have the biggest impact on increasing the black rhino population," said Ben Carter, executive director of the Dallas Safari Club.
Sacrificing one animal for the greater good of the endangered species is a move that critics and animal conservation groups call "perverse" and a "sad joke."

The state of Oregon auctions off Big horn sheep tags mountain goat tags and deer and elk tags. They make 500k at least from those tags. Everybody complains about hunters but they pay for 90% of the wildlife conservation projects through taxes and fee's.

Oregon is one of the most proactive States I know when it comes to Wildlife and Fisheries preservation.

I have spent some amazing and sweet years in the PNW and know Oregon well. Sometimes
I find myself longing for wild Blackberries, farmed Blueberries and Strawberries. Cutting Alder
for the wood stove, Steelhead and Salmon fishing, the Sandy, Clackamas, Columbia, Trask, Wilson
Umqua, Rogue and Deschutes Rivers .
Except for the traffic I love Porkland, Oregon, Jakes Crawfish, Country Kitchen, Spaghetti Factory,

One can never forget Astoria, and the Fiddler's Green, Cannon Beach, Oswald State Park, and
Mist, Oregon . . . heaven on earth. Of course I have been to Florence, Oregon, while likely never forgetting Silver Creek Falls, Oregon or Bagby HotSprings

exactly,
those are animals (well at least deer) that benefit from some thinning of the herd since we've eliminated their natural predators and much of their habitat. And of course you can eat those, is anybody going to eat this rhino meat?
I heard about this auction earlier and it's just sickening, I agree that "perverse and a sad joke" are a good terms to describe it.
Sure use hunting fees to conserve wildlife, but only hunt species that are presently at least sustainable.

I see what you guys are saying but what if that million dollar sacrificial Rhino funded a program to stop poaching and saved 5 or 10 or more illegally killed endangered Rhino.

Anudder alternative would be to use that Rhino as a symbol and place him where
through safe viewing he could be used to generate income for years to come.

Then all that money could go to help save ALL the rhinos.

the hunter may not be able to bring his trophy back to the US, USFWS requires a special permit to bring endangered species back as trophies, and as of now they aren't saying if they will allow this one, or not.
It's sad that the gov't of Namibia thinks that trophy hunting of the rhinos is helpful, but they do allow 5 older males to be killed each year.
