Took Out Above Ground Pool, Technique for leveling for new lawn? - Microman - 01-11-2014
Within the last month I removed the deck and 12 x 24 4 foot pool in my backyard.
Now I am left with the dirt area, that needs to be leveled.
There is a lot of coving material around the edges, but is there a technique to help level this., Maybe a long 2x4 to screed across to fill in low spots.

My wife's brother and his wife planted a perennial garden in the space, with tall grasses, etc. She was quite proud of it. But recently they sold the house, and the new owner tore up the garden and planted grass.
I think it was pretty level to begin with, but with a garden, it doesn't have to be.

Where the pool was is probably quite sandy right now if you had sand under it. Since it was compressed under the pool it does not need to be rolled, but you may want to add topsoil, then rake it to level it. Basic raking should be enough.

If they removed 6 inches of topsoil and added 6 inches of sand to have under the liner you might want to get rid of some of the sand or at least rototil a wide area mixing it all in.
The lawns here have 2 inches of sand with 4 inches of topsoil so that the grass never drowns or gets fungus/mildew/rot but then requires supplemental watering.
For leveling thy make a leveling rake that's wood with wooden dowels for tines.
grading rake:
I've used a regular garden rake, it's just not very wide. Just keep leveling until it looks flat and then do it some more. Starter fertilizer, level again. Spread seed and do it again. Lightly.

Pryor to planting you may want to use a pre-emergent to reduce weeds.
you can google this and some other planting suggestions
Till, shovel or loosen the soil of the area you want to plant. Rake it out leveling and removing
large stones. Amend the soil with a Peat Moss, Steer manure mixture. You can then broadcast
seed by hand, plant sod or ryzones. It depends on the grass and the way you want to start the lawn.
After you have chosen your grass and what you will plant apply another mixture/layer of Peat Moss
and Steer manure over the top and water.
As the the grass fills in you may need to repeat the drill in some areas.

Who, in their right mind, would apply a pre-emergent herbicide just prior to planting grass seed.
By definition - the grass seed would never sprout.

There is granulated which can be washed in by watering the area for about 2weeks.
To assume someone would suggest it is being done simultaneously or should be done
simultaneously is looooooney

pre-emergent herbicides prevent germination
it's common (when application is timed correctly ) to apply to prevent the germination of crabgrass seeds
It does so by preventing germination - period. There is no discrimination regarding type of seed
All seeds present while the herbicide is present will not germinate
one only has to read the large print on the instructions on any bag of herbicide
