which 1Password? - Sam3 - 04-17-2014

I was going to let Apple handle my passwords, but I decided to go with 1Password while it is on sale. My question is which version/bundle to get? This is what I have:

1 iMac
2 MacbookPros
1 (soon 2) iPads
1 iPhone
2 iPod Touchs
At work I use a Windows box - not mine, however I do have full administrative access to it.

My wife, my daughter and I share one user account on the Macs, we share all the i-devices, my daughter has password needs for her game sites, my wife for her work, mail, bank logins, me for my various account logins. My wife and I share some of our logins, our daughter's logins are known by us as well.

Should I get the family pack Mac+Windows bundle, or just a Mac version? Do I need the family pack? Can't we all share the same version?

What is Knox for Mac? What does it do that can't be done in 1Password?

Thanks!

I think the minimum purchase is 1password for Mac OSX, and 1password for iOS.

Windows is optional.

A family pack is optional but allows you to share licenses with family members that are outside your household.

My problem with using 1Password is that at work we have PCs... and we have very limited rights on them. So I wouldn't be able to use it at work.

You can just use the mobile app version of 1password at work, using your smartphone.

So I could let my brother-in-law and sister-in-law each take a family license?

This is my main concern also. I hope their website explains this, but if not, can you give me a quick run-down? Does it actually display the password on your iPhone and then you can type it manually onto your admin-restricted work PC?

No no no. The family pack is for five family members sharing your household. You could each have your own 1password file, your own master password. https://agilebits.com/home/licenses

It's not hard for multiple people to share one file; you just save logins as Google Bob or Google Alice.

There's a slight difference between the App Store version, and the one you download directly from Agilebits. If you intend to sync your passwords via iCloud, you'll want the App Store version. I think pricing can be different, too, especially when it comes to upgrades.

i think not. i shared my family pack license with my son who was away at college at the time and my brother who lives in another town. family need not be defined as household as far as i'm concerned.

Yes. You open the 1password app, and it will prompt you for either your master password or a low security 4 digit passcode (based on the settings you choose). Then you browse or search for your login. Click on it, and if I you didn't just enter your master password, you will now. At that point, your password will either be in plain text, or cloaked as ••••• (which you decide in the Settings menu). If it's cloaked, you click on the reveal button.

One thing that's nice is, in the revealed password, digits are in color so you don't confuse them with letters. Also, you have recipe choices for the random password generator. If you're going to be typing it in, pick a pronounceable password, so you get something like ti-heyt-yooj.

imo - have 1password installed wherever you want the passwords ENTERED.

sure, you could use non-generated passwords, easily typed, but that defeats most of the point of using it.

hm, i think it allows for word based passwords. that might be helpful.
