Data purging feels good - silvarios - 04-17-2014 Needed to find PDFs of some older RPG rules so I can cobble together a game for family game night and decided to purge 120GB or so of old data while rooting around in the drive. To be fair, some of the data was duplicate backups or old versions of files as this drive used to be primary backup drive before filling in as regular data drive. No worries everyone, I have at least one more copy of the remaining data, sometimes three of four copies. Anyway, felt great to get rid of all that data. I'm almost tempted to delete everything and go total data hermit, but I deferred that decision of another late night (or early morning if you will). Re: Data purging feels good - Zoidberg - 04-17-2014 There's a wealth of duplicates finders on the Mac App Store worth checking out if you're so inclined. Just check everything carefully before hitting that delete duplicate item button. Re: Data purging feels good - sekker - 04-17-2014 Congrats! Cleaupup LEADER! (deleting that much space on a boot drive will make your Mac feel new, hence the designation). Email bankruptcy is in my near future... Thanks for the tip on the duplicate finder programs for the Mac. I may need to get one. Re: Data purging feels good - davemchine - 04-17-2014 Good job on cleaning up your data. It always makes me feel more organized to do the same. I use the DaisyDisk program to search for data to delete, http://www.daisydiskapp.com . I removed about 20gb just a few days ago. Re: Data purging feels good - Paul F. - 04-17-2014 But...but....but... you might NEED that one day! (I don't have a problem.. I can delete those emails from 1996 any time I want... I just don't want to...) Re: Data purging feels good - GuyGene - 04-17-2014 Yeah, too bad I can't sell all my old mess to those Picker boys. Re: Data purging feels good - Zoidberg - 04-17-2014 I like using CleanMyMac2 (which I avoided for years) in uninstalling apps (and their various cronies) as well as general cleanup (like removing gigs worth of iOS updates I didn't realize were on my drive). It's one of those "tread carefully" apps, and I *never* just click "Clean", instead going point-by-point and deciding case-by-case. For duplicate searches, I've used Gemini without issue -- again, though, treading lightly. There are probably better apps. For archival stuff -- things I just want to have away -- I have a NewerTech external RAID as an attic for archiving apps, former client folders, milk-crating albums I don't want in iTunes anymore, etc. Re: Data purging feels good - sekker - 04-17-2014 I have a license for Gemini from a bundle. I'll have to give it a try, |
