I understand the desire to stand out from all the other black boxes people have. But I think the negatives can outweigh the positives. What were they thinking.

They were thinking that you'd have to place them on the top of your components - sort of like premium shelf space - so it would be seen, asked about, possibly create another sale after a visitor sees it and finds out what it does.
Basically they didn't want the device to be hidden, and also on top for heat dissipation, since there were some capacitor issues on some of the older models (not many, but some were reported to fail).
...and I completely disagree, the positives outweigh the (perhaps) one negative.

Well…yes, almost all of that logic did occur to me, but it still seems misguided. Unless you are in college or within a few years of it, the idea of swaying visitors with your gear is kind of silly, and doing so with something that ugly doesn't seem to be the best way to go about it. The rationalizations you mention all make sense. I just think that there are more people that wouldn't want that crap cluttering up their component racks than there are people that will say, "hey what does of weird looking thing do, and how can I get one?" Apparently Slingbox is OK with that, but from a marketing standpoint, it seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot voluntarily.
