What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - DP - 04-20-2014 ... like a .mov(?). I don't know video to save my ass. I bought a GoPro knockoff and am learning it but it seems to record only in AVI. When I double click on it I get a message that QuickTime can't open it. I did a little searching and found a free app at the App Store called MPlayerX, downloaded it, and bam! It opens and plays just like that. But if I want to put it into a generic or common format that I could send to somebody's email or phone, what do I use to convert it? TIA. Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - freeradical - 04-20-2014 HandBrake Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - Mini 9 - 04-20-2014 You can also peruse http://alternativeto.net/software/handbrake/?platform=mac I use Toast; po pcorn; SmartConverter; Wonder share; EVOM; Visual HUB; Make MKV:VideoM onkey Don't forget free online services as well. Just upload and they can convert. Good if it's already up there. You could open your own public or private YouTube channel. Upload the AVI video file there, they will host, convert, and serve the video to anybody you give the link to. Easy stuff. Jeff Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - davemchine - 04-20-2014 Handbrake is by far the easiest and most commonly used. It's free which is an added bonus. Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - Ombligo - 04-20-2014 As Freeradical suggested -- Handbrake. It is free, easy and very good. If you are trying to achieve a certain size then put it in handbrake, go to a bitrate calculator, input the info and set Handbrake for what it tells you. Other good options are MPEG Streamclip or MacX Video Convertor Pro (wait for it to be a freebie, it is often), but Handbrake takes care of 98% of what you need. Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - DP - 04-20-2014 Again, thanx, all! Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - thermarest - 04-20-2014 use VLC on Mac, Windows or iOS to play the .avi files. No need to convert. VLC Is the standard play-it-all swiss army knife of media players. Free and open source. No ads or crapware. Re: What's a good app to convert AVI video files to something more usable - rz - 04-20-2014 Second the recommendation for using VLC. I don't even bother with Quicktime anymore. |
