Good for them. It's for new customers only, not existing. It's smart because there's a lot of folks who'll subscribe for a month or two to binge watch House of Cards, then cancel the subscription, then subscribe again when Orange is the New Black comes out. Netflix will make more money, not just on the $1 goose, but also because people will just let their subscription ride. For me, as an existing and happy subscriber, it means they'll (probably) keep producing some great shows.

Don't start that happy dance yet. The clock is ticking for current subscribers too.
