[garden] I can't seem to grow blueberries - mrbigstuff - 05-09-2014

bought plants about 5 years ago and have tried them in 3 different locations (transplanting twice, moving barrel once) and none have seemed to take. how long does it typically take for these to start to fruit in any real number? I only get a dozen or so fruits on each plant and they are not looking too vigorous. actually, quite the opposite.

It is probably a soil issue. They grow reasonably fast if they are in the right environment.

It took mine about 5 years.

blueberries grow in a bog

I have 12
a building downspout empties into the center of the patch and I add 4 - 2.2 cubic bales of peat moss to the top of the soil every year along with a acidifier to get the ph at about 5

probably cheaper to buy them in the store but then I know what pesticides have not been used to grow them

last year I didn't get many

My Sunset Western Garden Book says that blueberries are prone to overbearing, and that you need to prune them to get good sized fruit. ;-)

It also says that you need to plant at least two varieties to get good pollination.

RIM had the same problem with blackberries.

planted two varieties, have not really pruned, as it's hard to prune what doesn't grow much, but I'll give it a snip.

as to growing in bogs, that is the opposite of what I have seen up north, where they grow on hillsides and right in the middle of well-drained fields.

are you growing the wild -on-the-hillside variety or cultivated bog variety ?

I have the tag somewhere.

i'm guessing you are guessing that my best guess is that I'm growing the cultivated variety.
