Interesting article, scary the number of stupid people in its comments section.

It's really sad that this was even a question of rights.

In most cases, you need a warrant to search a locked box in a vehicle, or it's trunk, incident to an arrest. You need a warrant to search beyond a suspects immediate control, incident to an arrest.

A lot of police departments were smart enough to understand this and have been getting warrants, avoiding losing a case in appeal.

I assume this doesn't affect consent searches, though smart cops know those get frequently get tossed.

But it's good to have this nailed down at the Super Court level. At least we can cling to the illusion of privacy a little longer.
