GM Advising Owners Of 182K Recalled SUVs To Park Outside Until Fire Hazard Fixed

The SUVs — model year 2006-2007 Buick Rainier, Chevy Trailblazer, GMC Envoy, Isuzu Ascender, and Saab 9-7X — were first recalled in Aug. 2012 in cold weather states, where it was believed that salt used to deice roads was doing the damage.

But as complaints continued to pile up, including reports of 28 fires, the recall was expanded nationwide in June 2013.

At the time, GM had believed that it could fix the problem by putting a protective coating around the window switch circuit boards instead of replacing the switches. However, when GM heard of continued malfunctions from owners whose switches had undergone this fix, it decided in June of this year to issue the recall to replace all the potentially defective switches.

Thing is, the fire hazard exists whether the car is in use or not — and at least one fire occurred while an SUV was parked in a driveway — so GM has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it will be notifying owners to keep their vehicles outside, rather than in a garage where a car fire would likely pose a greater risk to the building and its occupants.

...

How many vehicle recalls so far this year?

Man, it's long past time for someone to invent a teleportation machine.

As I recall, GM has effectively recalled EVERY SINGLE VEHICLE they made in last few years.

Quite a record ! I know they love making cars, but do they really have to see them all back again so soon ?

If they reduced the complexity, and cut down on the number of parts, the chance of defects drop.

They could easily do that by moving to hybrid (simpler motors, no starters) and electric (no transmissions, no emission control systems, no exhaust systems) designs.

riiiiight. 8 thousand battery cells, each with its own controller. That will help.

Since when does a Hybrid not have a starter? Simpler motors, I guess you've never looked under the hood
of a Prius. No transmission? Maybe you're thinking about all electric plug-ins.

Shoulda written "moving to series hybrids..."

Parallel hybrids can easily be every bit as complex as gas vehicles.

Yes, and there was a conjunction in there to indicate the separate clauses in the sentence for you.

Another Saab story. And it isn't even their fault, the 9-7 being a GM rebadge job.

The 9000s had a fuse box issue that burned a couple houses down.
