does my IT person know about FTP? - space-time - 08-27-2014

I had to download a file from an FTP server for work. I could not connect form work, I tried Internet Explorer, FileZilla, no joy. I asked IT if they block FTP; instead of Yes or No, IT Person replied that I had to use FileZilla (which I already tried) and I had to ask the vendor (who runs the FTP server) to use FileZilla on their side as well. WHAT? why would that make a difference? Isn't FileZilla a Client, what does that have to do with a server? I came home, downloaded the file, will put on USB stick and take to work. Just a 24 hour delay because they block FTP.

Did he specify you use Filezilla for a particular protocol, like sFTP?

Your IT person is wrong.

The vendor does not have to use Filezilla.

Most corporate networks block the heck out of FTP sites for obvious (malware) reasons. Your IT security folk(s) should be able to help you. The basic IT Tech will usually just make squeaky noises.

We have a bunch of FTP links through the corporate firewalls of doom, but they are all monitored, scanned, and carefully watched. And oddly enough, most of them are between Mac users inside and outside.
