Why I am an "online" shopper..... - samintx - 08-20-2006

In the first place I can't get macs here. I also like to shop price on PCs and don't like to pay the tax on computers when I can get free shipping or a better deal.

Other things...today is an example. I gave in and thought, "I'm not going to order an angel food cake pan online. I'll go to my local store and buy it with a discount coupon". And I wanted an inexpensive (under 50.00) new shower seat. After 2 stores I quit looking.

I ended up at 5 stores and NO ANGEL FOOD CAKE PAN or plastic shower chair! Spent more on gas than I would having it shipped. This happens all the time...I think I'll buy a blouse at Foley's or someplace....no sale...I end up all over the place looking for a blouse and frustrated.

Found free shipping and a reasonable price online for the chair w/back and have yet to order the angel food cake pan.

Do others have frustrating shopping in their town or is it just because I live in a town of 80,000 ?

Try a town of less than 25,000 to shop in (20 mile drive). It only gets worse.

I support local businesses when and where it makes financial sense. Some items are just marked up too high or have to be ordered anyway.

I am a certified eBay addict. I have saved a ton of money on both new and used items.

I'm with you on this one, sam, not to mention the rude individuals congregating in and blocking the aisles.. And my town isn't half that large.

Have you ever heard "I Ain't Goin' Nowhere" by Rick Moranis? (It's on The Agoraphobic Cowboy CD on the iTMS.

With lyrics like this, I might make it my theme song. :c)

"I go online, dsl, amazon, buy and sell,
Ebay, layaway, last bid noon today,
Plasma, Judy Judge, broadband, Matt Drudge,
J.Crew, B&N, dotcom, CNN
JPEG, e.mail, pop-up she-male
Shower cam, filter spam, slam bam.
I think it’s ma’am

I ain’t goin’ nowhere, man
Never gonna go nowhere
It’s a bungled jungle out there, man
Some kid got mauled by a bear
Surround sound in my own lair
I ain’t goin’ nowhere…."

That is great!

80,000? Try a town of a little less than 8,000, and we are the largest town for 70 miles in every direction. Forget buying anything Mac related, or anything in the tech world for the most part (except for what WallyWorld carries). The UPS/FedEx/DHL delivery personnel are very friendly though! Smile

Area of 80-ish thousand... nearest "big" city about 200 miles away.
And I have the same problem.

Worse yet are the local business infected with incredible arrogance.. "you OWE me this business, I"m a LOCAL business!".
I would PREFER to do business with local businesses. When I can do so and get decent merchandise, at a price competitive with what I can get it for on-line (Competitve, not necessarily LESS...), I will.
But that's happening less and less.

Some things just aren't availble... specialty tools for metalworking, gunsmithing, etc, there is no choice at all but to order them (or make them, but that's another story..).

We do have one local business man who really does his best to make a good deal. He runs a truck/boat/rv accessory shop. First time after he opened up I went in looking for some nerf bars for my pickup. I'd found the brand I wanted online for around $300 shipped, he wanted $375 for the ones he had on hand. I told him the price I had found them and told him if he could get with $25 of that I would buy them from him. Not only did he sell them from $325, he installed them for free!

Now whenever I go to his shop looking for something first thing he says is "what can you get them for online, including shipping?". He usually gets close enough to that price that I buy from him (as long it is not below his cost, he's not that desperate for business!).

I live in a VERY small town - we have apx. 6000 in our "city". Aside from groceries, and restaurant meals, I spend very little in this town. It is a tourist "destination" so read that to mean that any real goods you want to buy are scarce, non-existent, or WAY overpriced.

We drive 45+ miles to the nearest bigger towns with "real" stores - Costco, Target, Home Depot and the like, as well as a small mall.

Shopping locally is just not an option - for anything Mac you need to plan for a 2+ hour trip. Internet shopping becomes more and more attractive.

2 hours, yikes. I can expect to find most mac related things in my area in 30 minutes or less. In fact, there is a mac mini-store about 3 miles from my place, and another apple certified shop just a walk down the street from there.

I guess my 'city' is only about 60K, but where I live is literally across the street from Washington DC, and that's like 600K+ people, so I guess you could say I live in a heavily populated area.
