SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - fahdoul - 08-22-2006 Tried to back up my HD with CCC as I have often done in the past, and couldn't get a copy that would boot, so I figured it was time to try SuperDuper. Booted fine, but afterwards I noticed the icons for a lot of files on the clone had been changed to blank/generic ones, and the files could no longer be opened by double-clicking so the creator info or something must have been lost too. So that is hardly what I'd call an exact copy, and not much use as a backup. Anyone else run into this, or have any idea what the problem is? Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - shadow - 08-22-2006 [quote fahdoul]So that is hardly what I'd call an exact copy, and not much use as a backup. Let's see: Completely lose all my work for the past 10 years, including email, projects, and irreplaceable family photos or Minor inconvenience with icons Hmmm ... tough choice. That's not to say that it's not a program bug or PEBKAC, but it is hardly "not much use as a backup". What happens when you right-click on the file and go to "Open with..."? Does the proper app name appear in the list? Is it only with certain app files or similar types of files? (eg - photos) I use SuperDuper frequently and never have had this problem, btw. - Shadow Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - BigGuynRusty - 08-22-2006 Sounds like there was a major problem with the HD before you started, CCC wouldn't work, so instead of investigating the problem, you used SuperDuper on an obviously unstable situation. BGnR Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - fahdoul - 08-22-2006 Disk being copied was, and is, worrking fine. Ran First Aid and DW on it and niether indicated any problems. So hardly an "obviously unstable" situation - anyhow, if the disk does have hidden problems. wouldn't a true cloner just make a similarly damaged copy (or better, refuse to try!) rather than pretending to clone it, while introducing new errors of its own? BGnR Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - swampy - 08-22-2006 All all the icons generic? Or just program specific files? Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - johnc - 08-22-2006 Can't say with any degree of certainty why this happened, but this would be the first thing I'd try to remedy a generic icon problem. Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - johnc - 08-22-2006 BTW, you could also use Titanium Software's OnyX to help fix this specific problem (under the app's "Automation" tab, "Reset links between documents and applications"). Note that their "Maintenance" application will also reset the LaunchServices database. Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - JEBB - 08-22-2006 If you are only trying to make a bootable clone of your hard drive, try the 'Restore' function in Disk Utility. It has worked fine for that function for me. Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - fahdoul - 08-22-2006 I got two overlapping issues here, one is just getting a usable, bootable clone now, and the other is finding a long term backup solution. So it sounds like Onxy may solve the immediate problem, but do I really want to abe making backups which need such heavy-duty massaging? The SuperDuper guy seem to think that if I buy the program so I can use the smart update or whatever it is this will not be a problems - that it will update fine. But I'd rather know that before I buy. BTW when I say icons are lost, what I mean is I get the blank sheet of paper instead of the usual .pdf or quark icons - I'm not talking real custom icons, just the application icons. Re: SuperDuper screws up icons, files won't open - anonymouse1 - 08-22-2006 Doubt the problem is with SD per se. Did you try running DU and DW on the clone? Did they report any symptoms? Did you set any options on SD? |
