Any compelling reason not to do this? - ka jowct - 08-22-2006 My Lite-On CD-RW is having a lot of trouble reading disks. These same disks are OK in my Pioneer DVR-106. Any reason not to pull the trigger on this? I'd have two DVD burners in the machine, not that there is anything wrong with that… $32 shipped. I will probably do a bit more testing before deciding on this. So there is time to talk me into or out of this purchase. Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - Silencio - 08-22-2006 Well, the new DVR-111D will burn both DVDs and CDs a lot faster than your old DVR-106. For $32, it's a no-brainer. Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - ka jowct - 08-22-2006 It won't handle CDs fater than my 52X Lite-On, though, which is the drive I'd be replacing: it would play CDs at 40X and burn CD-Rs at 40X and CD-RWs at 32X. But I think the speed would be acceptable. Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - Silencio - 08-22-2006 I don't really notice the difference between 40x and 52x CD-R burns, but I'm not burning dozens of discs per day, either. I find I burn a lot more DVD-Rs now, in which case the difference between 4x and 16x is a lot more obvious. Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - jdc - 08-22-2006 nec 3550 has a 48X read, same cost http://www.newegg.com/ProductSort/Category.asp?Category=10 Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - dotman - 08-22-2006 I have heard burnng at faster sppeds can tend to produce somewhat unreliable results. Is there any truth to that, or is that only when you burn at higher speed than the rated media. I think you'll be very happy with the pioneer. Jump on it. not literally though. dot. Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - ka jowct - 08-22-2006 Just came across this word while reading DVD burner reports in the XLR8 database: walah. For those of you who are mystified: voilà. Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - Donkey Hotay - 08-22-2006 Literally: "Voi là" ("See, there" or "There!") http://www.answers.com/topic/voil http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/voila.html Compare: "Voici" from "Voi ici" ("See, here" or "Here!") Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - ka jowct - 08-23-2006 Voilà Voilà Voishington? Re: Any compelling reason not to do this? - RAMd®d - 08-23-2006 Yes, I've seen that as "walla!" I used to post "Violá!" and it would twist knickers. Cracked me up! No reason not to get the 111D. But the red text says DVD-ram burner, which is misleading. It's a DVD burner, but only a DVD-RAM reader, not burner. You give up some speed on the CD, but will it really make a difference? It wouldn't for me. If somebody make a Mac compatible 52X Combo drive, that might be an option. |
