Received Refurb G5 - Fans Are Full On - prof - 08-22-2006

I just received my refurb G5 and on power up the fans are
full on and stay that way. What can I try to get them to
simma-down-now???

TIA,
Prof

This behavior is typical of a machine which requires thermal recalibration of the processors. The G5 processor must undergo thermal recalibration whenever it is removed from and added back to the motherboard; it's a good bet your machine didn't undergo the recalibration process before leaving the factory. The same thing happened to one client of mine; my local Apple house had it fixed in less than an hour.

sometimes a SMU/PMU reset will fix it, too.

make sure the side panel is properly in place.

G5 Leader!

Update:
I tried resetting PMU, no change in full on fans.

So I downloaded Tempature Monitor and did some checking.

At idle:
Processor A averages 106. 2 F
Processor B averages 101.2 F

The only other reading that seemed concerning was the
Memory Controller Heatsink which averaged 129.2 F

Are these readings normal??

Any other ideas to tame these jet engine sounding fans??

TIA,
Prof

P.S.- Is it possible to do a Thermal Recalibration myself??

you may need to upgrade to OS 7.6.1 from 7.5, it fixed some of those fan and thermal recalibration issues that were mysteriously linked to Open Transport. good luck.

OK, no clue, but maybe a blown sensor somewhere?

Also, check your energy saver prefs, under options and adjust the processor peformance accordingly.

That stopped my G5 from "flying" after a system update.

What NO-S said. Most likely you need the thermal recalibration done.

The very same thing happened to me with a refurb I bought. The thermal recalibration is a program that is run to fix it but only Apple Service Providers have access to it. (I looked all over for it, but couldn't find it anywhere online.)

I took mine in to a local service provider and had it back in a day.

Good luck.

thermal calibration is done while booted from an Apple-provider utility CD.

you can do it yourself if you can get one for your machine. otherwise, your local Apple shop can do it for you.
