Sister's MacBook--system? - MartyStickle - 12-21-2014

My sister has a core 2 Duo Macbook 4,1 with 2 gigs ram currently running 10.6.8. She's wants to upgrade to Yosemite because she can't use YouTube due to lack of a plug-in. I told her to hold off because I'm going to be with her in a few days. What do you all think is the highest system she can run on that machine? I was thinking Mountain Lion or maybe Mavericks. If so, I presume I can find them on the app store on her machine and just do the download from that. What am I missing?

She would not upgrade anything else on the machine, which is used for surfing and email only. I believe she will soon upgrade to a new machine soon anyway. Appreciate any advice.

If you are going to update the OS on that machine, RAM is going to be a challenge.

You should consider at least 4 GB RAM, and maybe an SSD?

Find out more about "she can't use YouTube due to lack of a plug-in".

I'm on 10.6.8 and have no problem with YouTube.

One recent thing is the latest FireFox (34.0.5) blocked the Adobe Flash plugin if it was not the latest version for security reasons, which did prevent YouTube from playing, but just updating to the latest FlashPlayer is all that was needed.

Much less trouble than updating the entire Mac OS.

Youtube does not need any plug-ins at all.

The latest and greatest: OS X 10.10 "Yosemite" although I suggest max'ing out RAM to 4 GB (6 GB with the OWC kit).

That is correct—you can upgrade directly to Yosemite from 10.6.8 via the App Store.

You might want to double check that, I think a Macbook 4,1 is limited to 10.7.

A 4.1 may be limited to 10.6.8 due to 32 bit graphics

Chrome will work

Good suggestions folks. I'll look into the flash thing and will probably recommend that she not do too much with it. My hunch is she'll buy a new machine soon. Tomorrow I spend the day driving north to the family get together thing.

Yes, I think that's correct. 10.7 is supported but not later.

Yes, you're correct—I was looking at the MacBook Pro.

I will just second and third everyone one else.

There should be no issue with youtube. 3 machines here all running 10.6.8 and youtube no problem. If it wasnt working I would get an earful. Everyone is running Chrome tho -- since all their other school stuff is google docs. Chome doesn't need Flash.

If she's going new, then don't spend a dime on it. if she wants it to last a little longer, then $90 for a 240 GB SSD is all it needs. Forget about the ram. Wont help.

I just made that move for my SIL on her Macbook, 3,1. She didnt have the extra for a new Mac, so $80 for a 240 GB Crucial M500. 2 GB ram. Did a fresh install of 10.6.8, moved her iTunes and iPhoto over and Chrome only. It runs great. Boots in 20 seconds, 5+ tabs open and smooth as butter. She's thrilled.

FWIW< you can't buy Mavericks anymore. ML and Snow Leo are $20. I take that back. ML only.
