Riddle me this: Why Can Google Do What Apple Can't- Remote Desktop - celliott - 01-16-2015 OK, up through Mountain Lion I had been able to fairly successfully use Back To My Mac (BTMM) to access my office Mac from home and my home Mac from my office. Became fairly unreliable when I went to Mavericks, and now that I'm at Yosemite, it works maybe 2% of the time. Computers show up in the left hand column (sometimes) and almost never allow me to connect. I used to be able to access files and share screens- but not now. Along comes Chrome Remote Desktop- a free app that operates through Google's Chrome browser. Since I set it up at home and work, it has worked without a glitch. I can share files and screens, and it's fast and connects quickly. The one problem compared to BTMM is that Chrome Remote Desktop won't wake a sleeping mac, BTMM can with my Airport Extreme routers (if it worked). So, now I just leave my Macs awake in the event that I need to access them using CRD. One more nice thing- there is an iOS app that allows me to remotely access files and screens of my Macs from my iPad and my iPhone. It even has a cursor mode that allows me to control the cursor on my Mac. So, now I ask. If the bad guys can make it work, will Apple ever get their act together? I'm even having trouble accessing my Mac Mini from my MBP when I'm in the same house and on the same wifi network. Pretty crazy. I guess it's easy to rag on Apple and is becoming a popular past time, but those turning on Apple may not be all wrong. What happened to the quality control and things that just "worked". Re: Riddle me this: Why Can Google Do What Apple Can't- Remote Desktop - pdq - 01-16-2015 Have you tried TeamViewer? I haven't, but it sounded like it was the new go-to for remote Mac desktop sharing when I was checking into this about a month ago. TV is fine, but won't wake from sleep either. Works from iOS as well, I use it all the time. Chrome desktop is new. I never had an issue with BTMM, but switched cause I needed to access from a PC. Re: Riddle me this: Why Can Google Do What Apple Can't- Remote Desktop - celliott - 01-16-2015 I looked at TeamViewer but it seemed like more of a team collaboration tool than a simple remote access environment that accesses an unattended Mac. I might be wrong but I think there were some costs involved as there are with LogMeIn. I confess my lack of understanding how it all works, I just need something that works. Chrome has worked smoothly and quickly and is free, so I'll be taking it for a frequent spin. My main concern is with the Google/Android ecosystem putting up some success stories and beating Apple at some of it's own game. Re: Riddle me this: Why Can Google Do What Apple Can't- Remote Desktop - pdq - 01-16-2015 I'm pretty sure for the purpose you're describing, TeamViewer is free. They have some kind of enterprise version too that's not free - not sure what else it does. Re: Riddle me this: Why Can Google Do What Apple Can't- Remote Desktop - STL - 01-16-2015 Google proudly admits they read your gmail. Knowing that how could you ever trust their integrity enough to through them for access back to your Mac? If you're smart you won't. If you're accessing a business computer you should pay them LogMeIn does the job. It's not very expensive as business-expenses go. Personally, I prefer making a VPN connection and using ordinary Mac screensharing. ... There's a reason why Yosemite sucks at stuff like Back to My Mac. http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-you-can-do-to-fix-it/ I doubt that it'll be fixed any time soon. Try other solutions. Spitting into the wind my friend. A talking point is needed to demonize the latest in a long line of Apple enemies. This has been going on since IBM. Anywho, as you mentioned, all your email is scanned to a point. How do people think spam filtering works. |
