I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - Numo - 01-17-2015 I have a 4th generation AirPort Extreme. Would upgrading to a newer router be worth considering? If so, how about this one: http://www.rakuten.com/prod/d-link-dir-820l-wireless-ac1000-dual-band-cloud-router/249823714.html My current AirPort specs are: AirPort Extreme 802.11n (4th Generation) - Technical Specifications Size and weight Length: 6.5 inches (165 mm) Width: 6.5 inches (165 mm) Height: 1.3 inches (34 mm) Weight: 1.66 pounds (753 grams)1 Wireless protocols IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n Frequency bands 2.4GHz and 5GHz simultaneously Radio output power 20 dBm (nominal) Compatibility Interoperable with Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n enabled Mac computers, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Windows-based PCs NAT, DHCP, PPPoE, VPN Passthrough (IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP), DNS Proxy, SNMP, IPv6 (6to4 and manual tunnels) Re: I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - GuyGene - 01-17-2015 I'd say let'er be. Sounds like ye've got a good one already, but hey, wha' do I know? Re: I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - jdc - 01-17-2015 If it aint broke, then don't fix it. Re: I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - Will Collier - 01-17-2015 That one has some pretty bad user ratings on NewEgg and Amazon, lots of dropouts requiring manual resets is the major complaint. I don't think I'd swap a working Apple router for that model, even though the price is tempting. Is your current AE inadequate? Re: I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - Onamuji - 01-17-2015 Do you have a new Mac? If so, which model? If you have a Mac that is capable of 802.11ac WiFi then it might be advantageous to upgrade to a router capable of 802.11ac WiFi... If you feel that you need a modest speed boost. Otherwise, don't worry about it. Is your current AE inadequate? That's the question, is the OP having problems currently? Also, what is the Internet speed and are there frequent LAN transfers? Re: I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - OWC Jamie - 01-17-2015 unless you have newest hardware like ipad air2, mac pro or macbook air or other hardware that can take advantage of 802.11ac I'd not upgrade yet Re: I've never understood routers, so here is a dumb question . . . - Numo - 01-18-2015 Thanks to all that responded. I think I'll stick with what I have. |
