Do You Read Nutrition Labels? - freeradical - 02-07-2015

Looking at a package of unsweetened coconut that I pulled out of my kitchen cabinet, I notice that it says that it has a lot of saturated fat. But I already knew that. I bought this from an online source because it's hard to find unsweetened coconut in a grocery store. I buy unsweetened coconut because I find that I get a deeper coconut flavor from unsweetened coconut than the sweetened stuff in the grocery store, not out of some nutritional reason. Reflecting on this, I don't think that I ever read nutritional labels on products that I buy in the grocery store. I think this is mostly because I seldom buy processed foods. However, for those of you that do buy heavily processed foods, do you read nutritional labels, and why? I mean if you're buying heavily processed foods, it stands to reason that you're buying them for convenience, not for their "superior" nutritional content.

Why?

Depends upon the product.

A few examples: I avoid corn syrup/sweeteners in most stuff; I only buy peanut butter where the sole ingredient is peanuts; I don't buy "100% fruit" drinks where the first (or second) ingredient is grape juice or apple juice (because in mixed-juice products both grape and apple juice are processed to the point where they are just refined sugars with little relationship to either grape or apple); and I try to buy bread with good fiber content.

Usually, when looking for a new product or brand.

Any fruit juice or drink is pretty much just flavored sugar water.

I read the labels, groan, and then dine away.

You do know you can find actual coconuts at your grocer and roll your own.

I read them every time.

There hasn't been a coconut in a grocery store around here for decades.

I read the labels all the time avoiding corn syrup ( try buying salad dressing that doesn't have HF corn syrup in it ) and the "artificial" sweeteners. "No sugar added" almost always means they've poured on the artificial goo.

We can make from scratch an awful lot of items that would be more convenient to buy prepared if not fore the fillers, preservatives and other packaging enhancements.

I make my own grape juice and it is a bit too strong. Mixing with just plain water doesn't quite cut it palate-wise so we also have Ocean Spray white cranberry or white grape 'juice' in the fridge to blend it with.

yes, for sugar, sodium and words I can't pronounce. Fat to me is flavor, high sugar and sodium is mass produced feh that I probably won't like.
I was just at TJs looking at some new packaged frozen things (sometimes you gotta).
Mostly too much.

It's why I stopped going to most Asian restaurants, too much salt and sugar.
Lucky enough to have had the real deal in Asia, what we get here is no equal.
Although there are a couple of Thai places on 9th Ave that are very good.

I'm Gluten Intolerant (Celiac Sprue Disease) so, I have to read all labels. The "Big 8" (milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy) are supposed to be listed separately / highlighted but, that doesn't always happen. With todays microtype, it can be really difficult to simply read a label (I keep a fresnel magnifier in my wallet). Rye and barley (and their derivatives like malt) do NOT have to be highlighted but, must be avoid by Celiacs so, it's up to me to insure the food I buy is safe for me. Many products have a toll free phone number listed. Every time I've called such a number, I wind up speaking with either a Registered Nurse or Food Nutritionist who have always been VERY knowledgeable about food issues. In addition to getting solid information about the product in question, virtually everyone I've spoken with over the years has offered to send discount coupons, recipes and additional information about their company's products. This is probably one of the least used resources that consumers pay for in the price of the item they're buying. :boink:
