Square Trade for major appliances? - wurm - 02-07-2015

I know people like Square Trade for iPhones, computers, etc. But I'm wondering if anyone has experience with them for major appliances. We recently bought a new refrigerator and (naturally) declined Best Buy's extended warranty. To be honest, I don't even know how much it was, but after spending $1350 on the 'fridge, I didn't want to consider any extras.

Now I'm wondering if a warranty on something like this might be prudent. And if so, whether Square Trade might be a good option. Looks like I can get a 3 year plan for $130 or an 5 year plan for $260. Or do I just "self-insure" and hope for the best?

I always check the manufacturer warranty first. Oftentimes their warranty stretches just as long as the retailers 'extended warranty'. Which I find to be incredibly scummy.

I have purchased extended warranties for a few appliances. It's only worked out twice... a large LCD TV and a washing machine. In most cases it's a waste of money.

What about BB's extended warranty prices?

I got a BestBuy 5 year warranty on a new high-capacity $1000 LG dryer for around $100.

Speaking of Square Trade, I haven't noticed any of their 30% Off emails lately. Are they still available now and then?

I've mainly been getting 20% off with a few 25% off (max $25). When I was having trouble buying a warranty off their website recently, I called instead. The service associate gave me a better price than the online offer if I signed up right then with her. I posted about it here.
