On the anniversary of his death - RgrF - 04-15-2015 150 years ago, presidential candidates didn't have the luxuries current candidates do. They were put up by local families on campaigns trips and in exchange for a place to stay and would sometimes do chores before they headed to the next campaign stop. In 1860 Abraham Lincoln stayed at a farm in Ohio. The wife was a demanding sort and gave Lincoln a list of chores to do. Finally when he thought he was done and ready to go into town for a speech, she said "Last chores Abraham. For dinner we're having stew, corn on the cob, and apple pie. I'll work on the stew, but you're going to be on the front porch shucking corn and peeling apples until there's nothing left in front of you." And with that, she led him outside where there were two huge baskets filled to the brim with apples and corn. Little known fact about Lincoln, he was poor at shucking corn and peeling apples. After checking on him for what felt like the tenth time, she became real frustrated. She said "Abraham, how the hell can you be expected to lead a country if you can't even help with dinner!?" He replied, "Well Mrs. Lee, I have four cores and seven ears to go." Re: On the anniversary of his death - RgrF - 04-16-2015 Barring accident or genetic defect you've both got a long way to go, my very youthful (35ish) primary swears that these days my current age is at least 20 years lower than the actuarial age I grew to expect. Not only is 50 the new 40 but it would seem that 70 is the new 50. Check back with me in 10, if I don't respond... |
