Sliding dSLR price to keep an eye on, Canon 30D now $1250 w/18-55mm - pRON aHOLIC - 09-01-2006

This is the lowest legit online place I see at the moment.

With the 18-55 lens the price has dropped from $1350 to $1250 in one week. With added pressure from Sony and new Nikon and Canon bodies coming out, I expect the 30D to drop even more as the holiday shopping season approaches.

This camera will be for low light and action shooting photographers. It has very useable ISO 1600 and 3200. It does 5 frames a second shooting, something the A100, D80 and 400D Xti don't do. You do give up 2 mp because it is 8mp but going from 8mp to 10mp is not that huge of a jump.

I am also still watching the D70s price, looks like $859 with the 18-70 lens at the moment. We'll see if that drops soon.

30D seems to be the darling of the lower price dSLRs right now -- great camera

Friend of mine has a 30D and I've played around with it for a bit. Very nice bit of kit. Probably more camera than we need, though.

That's the exact same price Circuit City is selling the Nikon D80 kit for (pre-order). There's gonna be a battle royale. I like them both.

The 30D has a few differences in the faster frame rate and magnesium alloy body. Many consumers will see megapixels first though and that does make for some interesting pricing. I am hoping to see the 30D drop to $999 with lens and use it as a lightweight backup.

BTW, those looking at the Sony A100, if you are doing low light shooting for action at ISO 800 and 1600, pass on that camera. The noise will drive you up the wall.

If high ISO noise is an issue, and a new camera "isn't in the picture" try Noise Ninja - it's not nearly as elegant as a new camera, but it costs 9x less…

Download the profiles for your specific camera, and fire away with confidence at ISO 800 and 1600.

For us non-essential shooters, the 30D would be our main ax. I think Nikon put themselve in a good consumer position with it's standard 18-135 kit lens.

And don't forget the XTi -- 9-point focusing (same as 30D), 10.2 megapixels (2Mp more than 30D, and self-cleaning sensor. $899; and I think Circuit City or Best Buy already has them for $799.
