All shot handheld at f4.0 (wide open) at 300mm. Not too bad a lens for $99.

lens - eh.... not impressed: lousy contrast, lackluster color, not all that sharp.

"Your shots" are great. But yes, there is a lack of sharpness. Still for $99 dollars. Nothing photoshop or iPhoto couldn't fix.

I shot these in NEF (RAW) and really have little idea on how to convert them properly. I suspect that I need to do some more work on the files...

BTW- the lack of sharpness is probably due to the photographer's lousy skill with a manul focusing lens and not a reflection of the lens itself.
I have been able to take a few very sharp photos...but hard with a moving target at 300mm (450mm equivalent?)...

300mm is probably the territory you want to start using a monopod or faster shutter speed.

wowser, I have a Sigma 70-300mm lens. No matter what, it's soft above around 210mm. To me, the important thing is you knew what to capture.

acquisition cost; excellent
subject and composition; excellent
image quality, contrast, color saturation, sharpness [to a dgree], etc.; considerably less...
some things never change, I got a killer deal from the rep on their high end off brand Nikon mount zoom lens when I worked in a camera shop many years ago, and made the mistake of changing lenses to shoot some comparison shots on film w/ the Nikon F2, of the same subjects with different lenses, and included that zoom... the difference betwwen the off brand glass and the Nikon glass was staggering. it wasn't nearly as bad shooting black & white w/ appropriate filters, but the Kodachrome results didn't lie. I traded the zoom to friend that I had previously traded a Nikon FTn to, with the proviso that he only shoot b&w w/ it. these days, for $99, I'd also vote to keep your lens and photoshop the pics. listen to pRON, speed up and/or stabilize. good luck & enjoy.

I'm almost 100% sure that I goofed on the PP of this RAW image. I really didn't know what to do/how to do it. Then I noticed a little AUTO button in Nikon Capture. I think this is infinitely better.
BTW- iPhoto and NEF's dont really jive...hard as hell to get iPhoto to show the changes. Luckily, I exported the image to JPG and reimported...worked like a charm. Is that what you all do? First conver the NEF's to JPG then reimport?
