Why are fanny packs now deprecated? - ka jowct - 07-07-2015

The previous FP discussion got me thinking. Why are fanny packs now, apparently, objects of scorn?

Because those of us with ample fannies don't need the amplification.

Now ? They have always been an international symbol of "Feckless Tourist". Hence the desire to not look like one.

Despite that fact that my middle aged American Male outfit of polo shirt, cargo shorts. pulled up socks, and tennis shoes mark me as such in any case.

note also in most other English speaking nations, the slang term "fanny" now relates specifically to an intimate bit of female anatomy. And the term 'fanny pack' equates to something manufactured by the Kotex company or equivalent.

Because someone said so and others believed it... afaic, the right tool for the right job still overrules fashion and if this is what best suits your needs, use it and let others scorn you as they stuff their iphone in their skinny jeans back pocket to be crushed later...

Fanny packs have been on the fashion faux pas list for nearly two decades now.

All things go up and down in popularity.

The waist/fanny/rump pack is no different with the exception that they were never particularly popular. That's not to say they were never useful, but actually popular?

No.

I don't deprecate, but I never like them.

In the front, they're in the way when you sit down, worn in the back, they're in the way went you sit down. So you have to keep moving them around.

A smallish camera case/pouch, worn on a separate belt can carried above the left pocket is what I used the last two MWSFs. Big stuff was carried in an STM messenger bag that STM gave away a few MWSFs ago. It was out of the way 98% of the time. When driving, I could take it off or run the seatbelt under the pouch.

I wear a small one when I'm walking dogs, and find it way preferable to having something slung over my shoulder. It's just big enough to hold an adequate supply of poopie bags, my phone if I don't have a safe pocket available, keys, and has one zippered pocket that I fill with yummy dog treats. I can slide it to my right side so that it isn't in the way if I sit. I also had a useful one when I was doing a lot of cycling years ago: small, but I could fit my Pentax ME into it.

Take your pick. Plenty of choices.
