Interesting article yesterday from an obscure site connects the dots:

It is doubtful that Microsoft will keep the segment along much longer. The market shouldn’t be surprised if rumors about the potential sales of the Xbox unit becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Best case scenario for current XBox owners may be a sale of a spun-out division. More likely, it seems to me, is XBox becoming another victim of Nadella's "tough choices".

Looks more like merging gaming into the Windows 10 environment. Lots of gaming has moved back to the computer.

True dat. But XBox has only been marginally profitable for MS over the years - why hold on to the underperforming asset of a separate gaming system when you're trying to consolidate?

Master Chief collection was a huge fail, broken for over 100 days. Games for the XbOne are on sale nearly continuously, and I don't recall M$ paying for as many cross platform exclusive release titles like they did in the past.

I know a lot of Xbox gamers. Seems like there would be a lot of disappointed people who would not transition happily back to PC gaming if the Xbox flames out. At least not on Windows. Perhaps Steam on Linux.

I remember that xbox was set up to lose money for years to nab market share. Did it ever turn a profit?
