iPhone 5 just died (it is alive) - space-time - 08-31-2015
this iPhone never game me issues with battery. Today around 4 Pm I think I had 70% battery left. Around 4:30 I wanted to use it, it turns out it is dead. no response to any of the buttons. I felt the iPhone was warm. Around 5 PM I could no longer feel that it was warm, it cooled down to room temperature. I tried already 2 different chargers at work, no response. I will go home and plug it into my own charger and leave it plugged in for a while and see what happens.
Probably just coincidence (or not), I changed the case on Saturday. I went back to an Otter Box case which although bulkier, provides more protection than the skinny case I used before.

I think I checked that before and it is not eligible. Mine was made sometime in April or May 2013.

Still, if I plug it in, shouldn't it come ON, even with bad battery?

I've seen iOS devices go through a number of phases when charging from a completely dead battery based on how much of a charge is getting built up.
1) No indication of life
2) An icon showing that the charger is connected and charging but no battery level icon.
3) A red/empty battery icon and then it will boot up.

I went into an apple store with a iPhone 5 with a malfunctioning battery (bulging) and out of warranty period coverage. They were almost eager to replace it and did at no charge to me. I think that it was to avoid any potentional bad press from battery incidents. You might give it a try.

I well now it came back on. It was plugged in for about 2 hours and now it started, battery says 92% and charging.

If you have a sudden drop in charge (like from 70% to 20%) then that's a sign the battery is almost kaput. Time to replace.

How much does Apple charge for a new battery?
This is the iphone from work. Technically theirs, not mine. Practically mine, not theirs. I want to get a new one anyway after Sept 9. Probably a 6S. Not sure if I want to repair this one. If I knew for sure that they let me keep it, and if I could unlock it, I would not hesitate to spend $100 or so to get a new battery. But until I clarify if they let me keep it, and if I can unlock it, I will not spend money, at least until I figure out what happens next week.

Your battery is probably fine, your phone most likely froze. The fact that it was warm, but unresponsive points to that...
If it happens again, hold down the sleep/wake button and the home button for ten seconds and then release them to force it off. Then hold the sleep/wake button for 3 seconds to turn it back on.
