Ant invasion on dishwasher - space-time - 09-15-2015

came home tonight to find about 20 little black ants roaming on the dishwasher door. Some of them try to get into a little gap between the steel door and the plastic panel that carries all the buttons. I am not sure what they found in there all of a sudden. I looked inside the dishwasher (which was half loaded with dirty dishes) and there are no ants there.

Wife says she wiped the door with "Windex" (I have not seen the bottle yet to confirm that it has ammonia). Apparently ammonia destroys the scent they leave behind that helps them find the way to food and back to nest.

right now I am running the dishwasher. what is my next step? I guess I need to find out why they come in there and eliminate the attraction. Maybe I need to take the 10 year old dishwasher apart and clean inside the door? I am not looking forward to that.

1) I have some left over Ortho Home Defense from about 2 years ago, I wonder if it is still good or I need to go and get fresh stuff.
2) we just put a fresh one, will go and buy more tomorrow evening.

If when you crush one and smell it, if it has an odor similar to coconut, they are probably odorous house ants. I don't believe they eat wood, and usually come in from outside, and exterminators can often trace the long trail they have on the outside of the house, usually on the concrete footing. Just search for "odorous house ants" online for the best exterminating solutions. LyleH

Advice on ants is so often useless. Most of it is baloney, and the most of rest applies only to some species of ants.
