tooth implant advice? - mrbigstuff - 01-30-2016

I guess it's time after 20 years of a missing molar. reason now is that in order to do a crown on the adjacent tooth, dentist said that I should get the implant done now and crown later.

any advice? recent implanters?

how much is gonna cost you?

my friend had several done, I believe he paid thousands for each, that was several years ago, in SF. better start saving.

Had three ( two molars, one incisor ) done within last year, in Baja. Best dentist, best technology I have experienced. One third the cost. PM for more info.

I just had one done and went to Cancun Mexico. Excellent job and saved over $2,000 and that was after a flight and hotel.

I did not have a titanium implant but a zirconium implant for health reasons.

I did, although not recently, and asked a similar question of the forum:

You will most likely need a bone graft due to the time that has passed since your tooth was extracted.

I was given the pamphlet that is shown in this video by my orthodontist:

Your doc will probably provide something similar.

Expect the process be spread out over a number of months so that each step has time to heal and the implant to fuse.

also get a second opinion. a second visit to a different dental surgeon should be a few hundred $, but keep in mind you are about to start a multi thousand $ procedure.

I originally went to 3 periodontist and got 3 different prices, vastly different.

Once I figured out exactly what I wanted and planned my attack I contacted Ocean Dental in Cancun.

Went to Columbia Dental school in NYC. They did an excellent job. The max total there for a complete job (post and crown) is around 2400.

I din't need a bone graft, so the post was 500. My dentist did the crown for me at a reduced price, so my total was about 1700.

Be very careful and approach with caution, after implantation of the posts I developed a serious infection that he unsuccessfully attempted to treat with two different antibiotics for one month. Finally he changed course went back in and removed the posts and treated with topical antibiotics and said to let heal for several months before revisiting. I terminated any further treatment with him and changed to the oral surgeon who did the implants for my wife. When notified of my dissatisfaction with his services he agreed to fully refund the $6200 I had paid for procedures related to two implants in upper jaw (more difficult than lower jaw owing to thinner jawbone and proximity to sinus cavities). The refund was likely prompted by my reading up on malpractice suits and how to start the process by making requests for complete transcripts of all my records and X-rays in their office. Once his staff notified him of my requests I suddenly got a call from him and a long discussion ensued where I told him of my reasons for going elsewhere and subtly implied that I was more than ready to go to court if necessary.

Just remember there is no such thing as a risk free medical procedure, when they tell you that in one of every 1000 procedures there is a risk of complications up to and including death take it seriously and choose your doctors very carefully. When you happen to be the one in a thousand that experience complications it is very serious and in my case the infection could have quickly become life threatening. Reading online the statistics relating to complications from implants included the number of deaths directly related to infections was very alarming, a small percentage but still a real number representing real people that lost their lives just trying to fix a minor inconvenience like missing teeth.

I should add that I am particularly sensitive on this subject as five years ago during a routine colonoscopy the doctor perforated my colon resulting in three days in the hospital on IV antibiotics. So I am of the opinion that for whatever reason I seem to be cursed with the worst outcomes with routine medical events and the less I see of doctors the longer I may live.

It's the "practice" of medicine. No one has perfected or mastered it.
