When booting from an external HD, the iMac's internal HD does not appear on the desktop.
Guess that means it's not accessible.
Why not?

it should be in the side bar, under Devices, and it should be accessible, unless there is something wrong in your system

Why not?
It does not mean it is not accessible. It means you don't have hard drives showing in the Finder.
Open Finder Preferences (or click on your Desktop and then Cmd comma).
Select the "Sidebar" tab.
Check the boxes for what you want to happen/see.
Done.

Apple stopped putting the HD on the desktop some time ago.
I used to change that in the Finder Prefs, but stopped because I just had no need.
What I did to was drag my Home folder to the Dock. I can access the most useful stuff from there. I also put the Home icon on an empty folder and put it in my User folder. I put the account name, preceded by a space, in the folder name.
On rare occasions where I need to delve deeper I use the sidebar icon, or the Go/menubar method.
