Tires for a 1997 Toyota Rav4 - kap - 02-22-2016

Wife's car has 425,000 miles on it (yup, original engine). It needs new front tires. We don't think it's worth to pay over $300 for a set of 2 tires (least expensive at Costco). Wife's first choice Dunlap brand; we don't know how long this car will last so we are looking at the Neptune Experience $90 each/35,000 mile. A friend suggested to get lightly use tires. Again, that was based on the fact the car is old. What are your thoughts on this brand of tires?

When we had our RAV4, I remember it being a very odd sized tire (at that time), so the section was always down to like 2 choices at Costco.

Front tires affect steering feel, most of your braking is done through the front tires...I'd be inclined to skip lesser-known brands like Neptune and go for something from a well-known manufacturer like Dunlop, Continental, Bridgestone, Michelin, etc. My .02...

It's probably the same two choices they have now.

If the RAV4 is 4WD, you need to buy 4 tires. Dunlop has been a decent brand. I haven't kept up on which companies source tires from Chinese plants. Never heard of Neptune tires before now.

Yeah, it looks like the Alhambra Costco only has an option between two Michelin tires in 215/70-16. The Costco website is really annoying. It needs kap's Zip Code because tires at my store might not show up at a different store.

The two rear tires are Dunlop brand. Those two will be rotated to the front; do agree with your assessment, however.

Not a 4WD. Yeah, I am wary of getting Chinese made tires; American made ones are gold coins these days. What the best way to find out?

The manufacturing plant code is sometimes stamped on the sidewall. Most tire places won't tell you unless you ask and they know how to read the codes.

1997 Rav4 uses 215/70/R16

Starting at $80, shipped
Cheapest Dunlap is $129 plus mounting (unless you have a discount Tire nearby)
I'd likely look at the Falken ($93) or Cooper ($100)
