How did my prefs get whacked in my new 10.11 computer? - hal - 02-23-2016 So I moved from my 2012 10.9 imac to a 2014 10.11 imac and things have mostly been good, but today I was having all kinds of www issues. Damn firefox on the blink again I assume... But I'm getting hangups in safari too... then damn Comcast must be on the blink again... I go to check on my network prefs to see what my DNS settings look like and I get this: ![]() So it's damned 10.11 on the blink... ugh... After a restart, the www works again. But all of my apple apps prefs have been forgotten - mail is no longer in 'classic' view. Itunes looks insane and takes a while to get where it used to be. All of the web pages open in FF required me signing in again (this one included). What happened? Re: How did my prefs get whacked in my new 10.11 computer? - Onamuji - 02-24-2016 Migrated your user account? Sometimes the UID gets screwed up and need to reset home folder ownership and permissions. Just had to do that today for someone whose Adobe apps were throwing preference errors. Run First Aid on the drive from the Disk Utility in case you have a serious problem with the directory structure. Run SMART Utility. A 2011 iMac stands a fair chance of having an age-related drive failure. Should repair permissions on the boot vol and ensure that you've got the latest OS updates from the App Store, too. Re: How did my prefs get whacked in my new 10.11 computer? - hal - 02-24-2016 Yes, I migrated from a CCC backup of my other computer, but it's been running fine for days and has been shut down a couple of times along the way. It was only after it awoke from sleep today that everything was whacked. I checked Smart Utility before I did anything - no errors and only 40 hours powered on total. I didn't know you could run permission repair - I did as the article asked, and it saw LOTS of files with permissions to repair and did so, but one set of files (inside ~usr/share/zoneinfo/US related to time zones) were not fixed because of 'Error 1: Operation not permitted'. Doesn't really look like something I should be concerned about - should I? I ran this on the boot drive as it was running, NOT from another drive or partition - is that ok? I'm up to date with OS software. I did a safe boot somewhere along the way and all seems fine now - I'll keep an eye on things thanks AGAIN!!! They're usually not of any consequence. I'll study on that tomorrow. thanks again! Re: How did my prefs get whacked in my new 10.11 computer? - Grumpyguy - 02-24-2016 Thanks, I have that exact same issue happening. |
