New pro Epson photo printers coming soon - laarree - 09-16-2006

Just got an email from Epson confirming what I had heard last month from a Photoshop & digital printing uber-pundit, that new Epson pro photo printers are on the way in late September ( I assume in sync with Photokina).

This was Epson's email:
"It's Coming.
9.27.06

Dear Laarree,
On September 27, we'll unveil our newest professional printer. We want to tell you
about a new printer that's going to get your adrenaline pumping, your heart racing
and your imagination soaring.

For starters, it looks cool. It's sleek, slim, stylish and space efficient. Think high-end
sports car.

But, it's what's inside that will really raise your pulse rate. This engineering
marvel incorporates several radical new technologies. And, of course, it takes
full advantage of our already industry-renowned Epson UltraChrome K3™ inks.

We've saved the best for last. Wait till you see the price. We think you'll be not
just pleased, but amazed.

So mark your calendar. Set a reminder in your PDA. And, put a note on your
computer monitor — SEPTEMBER 27 — it's the official release date of what
promises to be a huge new leap forward in professional printing.

This is going to be exciting."

The uber-pundit I alluded to was someone I took a class with--I was having a conversation with him about what a PITA it was to have to swap matte black and photo black ink cartridges in the latest K3 epson printers--I've installed and manage the use of an Epson 4800 at my work place among other things--and he smiled and said wait until late September. He has influence at Epson regarding hardware and software development, and I assume he was under an NDA.

I know there are many photo geeks visiting this forum, so folks, it sounds like the start of a new family of ultra-groovy Ultrachrome K3 Epson photo printers which no longer require expensive and time-consuming black ink cartridge swapping is imminent, no doubt inspired by the recent aggressive competition by Canon & HP for the $ of pro photographers, photo geeks and graphic artists.

Me? I'm more excited by this than by the recent new iPods for sure.

i wish there was something between the 4800 and the 2400/1800 that used larger carts

i used to have a 3000 and a 5500 -- the 3000 was a great CMYK printer that would print forever when you put in epson 9000 carts -- it was just slow

bought an 1800 a year ago, havent really done that many prints and i have already bought a new set of carts...

Does it come with the awesome clogging feature?

I know the 2400 and 4800 will be joined by new models designed for the photographer. Image quality coming out of these new models will be at a new level. Looking for a 13" or 17" printer? Wait a few weeks.

hm, the cries of a bitter owner of an older, low end epson.

i've used a number of pro epson models and i've never had a problem with clogging.

I am still putting along with my 2200.

Re: New pro Epson photo printers coming soon - weapon - 09-16-2006

Previous epson 3000 and 5000 owner. Both had clogging problems. Got rid of them since eventually I worked myself away from the need to print large format images.

I have never owned any low end printer from epson but I would think if you wanted someone to buy your high end gear, you would make sure your entry level gear was working correctly. Not everyone goes out and buys a 3k printer on the first day.

Not bitter just truthful.

Cool. I don't blame anyone for faulting Epson where fault is due. The problem is that nobody else has a line of printers that compares longevity and quality wise for pro photo use. Both cannon and hp have some offerings but neither compares to Epson's line - I can do test prints on my 2400 and if i need to, move up to a 9800 and print a 40x50" print. (and yes, i do occasionally sell big prints.)

If you follow the epson forums you'll be aware that even the latest/fastest/bestest epsons come up with problems of the earliest.
