gross?!.....Phillies prospect Matt Imhof loses right eye in freak accident..... - NewtonMP2100 - 07-01-2016 .....blech....his eye was crushed like a grape............... Phillies 2014 second round pick Matt Imhof has right eye ‘crushed like a grape’ in freak training accident .....Philadelphia Phillies prospect Matt Imhof was forced to have his right eye surgically removed after his eye was crushed like a grape in a freak training accident last Friday, he said on his Instagram account. Imhof, 22, was taken by the Phillies in the second round of the 2014 draft. The minor league pitcher was playing at Single-A Clearwater and participating in a routine stretching exercise at the time of the injury. Imhof was using a rubber resistance band anchored to a wall when he was struck in the face by a large piece of metal that broke off of the mounted base, according to the Philly Inquirer. The impact of the piece of metal resulted in a fractured nose, two fractured orbital bones and the loss of vision in Imhof’s right eye, he said. Immediately after the accident Imhof said he was taken to the ER and then transferred to the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, the No. 1 eye hospital in the country, where doctors attempted to reconstruct his right eye. “That night, the doctors informed me that the damage to my eye was extreme and essentially that my eye had been crushed like a grape,” Imhof said. “The doctors told me they were going to do everything possible to reconstruct it but in all likelihood I would never regain sight in my right eye.” “This has been the hardest week of my life,” Imhof said. “But I’ve had amazing support from my family and friends to help me get through it. For those who have been wishing me well, your support has not gone unnoticed and I appreciate everyone who has kept me in their thoughts and prayers.” Although Imhof was forced to have his right eye removed, he said he was grateful to avoid brain damage and still have vision in his left eye. While his baseball career is over, Imhof said he isn’t discouraged, and still plans to live a happy and successful life. “I just wanted to write this message to let everyone know that even though I suffered some bad luck, I’m not dead,” Imhof said. “I’m gonna be alright, I’m gonna persevere, and I’m gonna succeed. It takes more than this to bring me down. Again thanks to everyone for the support.”.... wow, imagine that.......?! I am not sure at all that I would. Re: gross?!.....Phillies prospect Matt Imhof loses right eye in freak accident..... - bfd - 07-01-2016 Poor kid. What a horrible accident. Re: gross?!.....Phillies prospect Matt Imhof loses right eye in freak accident..... - Pam - 07-01-2016 Ici, yuck, and how horrible! To lose your career over something like that too. Re: gross?!.....Phillies prospect Matt Imhof loses right eye in freak accident..... - silvarios - 07-01-2016 That's awful. My condolences to the young man. As already noted, glad he can bounce back and realize he still has a lot of life left to live. It is perhaps good that he is able to say these things, but that does not necessarily make them emotionally true. He is in for a long difficult adjustment -- losing an eye and a career at the same time is a heavy blow, and this kind of stress affects people, no matter how "strong" they are. He may even come to resent the need to put on an optimistic face for the public. The need to pretend strength in the face of pain can be very stressful in itself, and often makes the pain worse than it would be otherwise. I hope he has people around him that he can be honest with if/when the low feelings hit him. I'm just hoping he realizes he can be an inspiration to many people and is able to keep the positivity going. |
