Fishing with a magnet for my iPhone 6s+ - RoadToad - 07-02-2016

I dropped my phone off the edge of a dock into 3.5 feet of murky lake water. There is a steel plate between the phone and the case that goes with a dashboard magnetized holder. I'm looking at strong neodymium magnets to try and fish it out. This one: neodymium magnet has a pull force of 69 lbs. Is that too strong? Would it break the glass?

The phone is in 3 feet of water and you worry about breaking the glass? You should be lucky if you get your data back.

It's quite possible if your phone rests against an old lawn mower engine it could be caught between the two and it's bend ability field tested.

Do you have any dead hard drives around, there's a fairly strong magnet in those (especially the 3.5" drives) if you want to take it apart. Quicker than ordering something.

Thank you for your responses. I didn't realize the magnets in a hard drive were that powerful. I have a recent backup, so I'm not concerned about the data. I will update if I retrieve it.

Just dug through my junk drawer and found the one I had from an old SCSI Seagate drive, and it's not as strong as I had remembered. It might not be much more powerful than the one on your car mount (can you use that one). I was able to stick it to an empty file cabinet drawer and use it as a handle to slide the drawer in/out, but it wasn't strong enough for that initial pull to get the drawer out of it's fully closed position that requires more force.

Try a auto parts store for a magnetic wand. It's like a chrome auto antenna with a magnet. You can tape a stick to it for more length.

Good luck!

My bet is that you have now left what will become a million credit archaeological find in 100,000 years...

Stupid question, why can't you jump in the 3.5 feet of water and fish it out yourself???
Granted unnecessary technology is a LOT more fun....
