Issue with Pool Manager - space-time - 07-03-2016

I live in a Home Owners Association and we have a pool. The rules say that you can bring a number of guests, I believe 4. In the past we (and other neighbors) were able to invite 5-6 guests and no one raised an issue, especially when there were few people at the pool and every one is polite and not making noise, trouble, etc.

Last night we invited our friends with 2 kids; I stayed home to grill and wife when to the pool with our kids. When our friends showed up, they brought with them a grandmother. Fine, they go to the pool, and it turns out the pool manager was there and said the limit is 4 and forced the mother to stay outside the gate. The dad and the kids went in the water, the mother an grandmother never took off their street clothes. All they wanted to do was sit down on a chair, but no, he said one of them had to leave. So the older grandma stayed to sit down and the mother had to wait outside the gate, standing up!

Wife tried to explain to him, but he wouldn't give in, he said if the mother does not step outside, then my wife had to leave the pool.

There was no one else at the pool, and this never happened before.

I was home and when they all came and told me, I felt so embarrassed by the whole situation.

What do you think? what would you do if this were to happen to you?

I'd shove some firecrackers down his pants and throw him in the pool only after the firecrackers caught his pants on fire!

That's why I wouldn't go near a HOA property.

Small minded people like enforcing rules to ruin other peoples experiences. Another guess is they didn't speak with the local accent and he thought he was protecting the association from "them."

That does sound embarrassing. The only reason I can imagine right now is the manager was concerned about insurance.

Pool manager is white. My friends are white, one of them is a computer scientist and the other is a medical doctor. Not that this has anything to do with it, but I wan to give you an idea that these are educated people who are polite and don't offend anyone.

Most of the community around here is mixed, people from all over the world, and in my HOA the majority of residents are Indian and Chinese. Most residents have some accent. We all get along just fine!

"The racial makeup of the township was 41.07% (9,445) White, 8.03% (1,847) Black or African American, 0.30% (69) Native American, 46.22% (10,630) Asian, 0.02% (4) Pacific Islander, 1.76% (404) from other races, and 2.61% (600) from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 6.21% (1,429) of the population.[8] As of the 2010 Census, 29.6% of the township's population self-identified as being Indian American, making them the largest minority group in the township.[8]"

I live in a small community with an HOA and that was part of the draw for me. I'm a big supporter of following rules so everyone can enjoy themselves. That said, I think the pool manager could have been more flexible. He could have said, "If more people come to use the pool you will need to abide by the 4 person rule." I think that would have been fair. Perhaps you could contact the HOA and request a clarification of the rules. It seems to me that an adult, not swimming, supervising children should not count as one of the four people allowed in the pool.

My wifes mother had trouble with Leisure World here in Seal Beach, Ca.

She was in the pool, and doing her exercise to a tape deck playing music. I would say quietly, but I wasn't there, and wife's mother (now deceased), had bad hearing.

A lady that lived in Leisure World Seal Beach, got so mad at my mother in law, she kicked the tape player into the water.

There was a stink, and the lady was found at fault.

But worse and changing the subject, when my wife's Aunt and Uncle were getting too ill to stay at Leisure World Seal Beach, they moved to Vista, Ca., to live with their daughter.

Now there 50 year old son thought he would just move in, and take care of the place. No way. You need to have your TAX records in order, You need to have X Thousands of dollars in the bank for a certain period of time. He couldn't stay there. He would be locked out by the head of the association that takes care of those two buildings.

He wanted to come and go, and finally realized he didn't qualify to be able to stay, even though the place was paid for, and all that was necessary was the monthly DUES, around $400-$500.

Every time he then came to work on the place or have carpet put in, there would be a lock preventing him from entering his parents property.

They never had a problem living there, but be aware of the many rules and regulations. I am so glad my wife and I never chose to make that move.

This lady was like the Gestapo. And took a lot of upper management talking to get to have the lock removed and off his case.

DONT LIVE AT SEAL BEACH, Leisure World, unless you are familiar with all of the RULES and REGs.

Well, they really need to clarify what "in the pool" is defined as.
