Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - mrbigstuff - 07-06-2016 ...and owner of the money generously gave him $100 for the effort. http://www.boston.com/news/local-news/2016/07/05/boston-taxi-driver-finds-187000-left-cab Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - RAMd®d - 07-06-2016 I haven't seen the word "hackney" in years, and didn't know it had a division! One the one hand $100 seems pretty cheap for a "finder's fee". On the other hand, the driver did what we (most of us) think all good people *should* do- turn it in because it's the right thing to do, and shouldn't require a reward. Not to mention it would have been a little tough to pull off "What backpack?" scenario. So what's the obligatory amount for tipping a Good Samaritan? Lastly, had it been me, I would have been *wearing* that backpack even if the ride was from the Bronx to the Island. (No, I don't know NY.) Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - Grateful11 - 07-06-2016 I realize he didn't have to give anything at all but $100. My late FIL lost his billfold at a farm auction about 40 years ago and he had I think $1000 in it and he gave the kid that found it $100. Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - N-OS X-tasy! - 07-06-2016 A reward equal to 0.05% of the returned money? It would have been less insulting to give no reward at all. Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - RAMd®d - 07-06-2016 Ok, so the cabbie (or anybody) is *entitled* to a "respectable" reward. My bad. I don't know what I was thinking. Interesting concept, being insulted by gesture of gratitude, and that a grander monetary gesture would be *less* insulting. As has been mentioned in other threads, some cultures find any tipping insulting. Whether or not that should be the case in the US, I'd like to think returning found property of any nature wouldn't engender a tip for doing the right, honorable thing. Of course, with honor and integrity so often demanding a price, I can see how it's easy to be jaded. Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - blooz - 07-06-2016 I agree that "doing the right thing" should be enough, without reward. Not that i would turn down the hundred bucks if it had been me. The Seeming paltriness of the reward is in keeping with the character of a person who would be stupid enough to carry that much cash around in the first place, and then forget it in the back of a cab, or anywhere, in the second place. I find the whole thing about the inheritance coming to him in cash rather bizarre. Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - Rick-o - 07-06-2016 If it were me that had misplaced the money, I would have given the cab driver $186,900. for his honesty. I'm not arguing that the finder should expect a large reward, or a reward of any size, for that matter. I'm arguing that if the rightful owner of the money was going to go to the trouble of providing a reward, that act of gratitude should have been commensurate with the magnitude of the finder's act of honesty. Re: Cabbie turns in $187,000 found in back of his cab.... - space-time - 07-06-2016 I didn't even know "hackney" was a word, LOL. yes, I can see both sides of the story and I personally wonder what I would have given him, under the stress of losing that money and then the joy of having it back. 10%? 10k? 5k? I don't know. But what I know is that I would not travel with such a large amount of cash, and if somehow I had to, I would make sure I would not leave it behind. The proffered $100 was a minuscule 0.05%.- a twentieth of a percent. |
