Report: Study finds super bacteria in venues for Rio Olympics
....Sailors and health experts have voiced concerns about the pollution issues in the waters that encompass the Rio Olympics’ sailing venue.
Boats are turning brown in Guanabara Bay, something sailors blame on an oil slick that has entered the waters. Not so apparent is another potentially more dangerous issue: so-called “super bacteria” in the waterway that is resistant to antibiotics.
"These bacteria should not be present in these waters,” Renata Picao, a professor at Rio's federal university whose study found the super bug told Scientific American. “They should not be present in the sea.”
Researchers believe the bacteria entered the bay from raw sewage that has flowed in from tributaries from not only thousands of households in Rio, but also hospitals where the super bug is generally found. Issues with Guanabara Bay along with surrounding beaches were the studied by researchers as part of two studies, which took samples in 2013 and 2014.....

And yet athletes are willing to risk their lives and aren't backing out/boycotting these Olympics. If I was a long-distance swimmer, a rower or a sailor I would not be going anywhere close to Rio.
Is the glory of being in the Olympics that great that it's worth risking one's life over it?

Yeah. I can see a top level athlete risking life and limb due to a personal issue. That's what they do. Push themselves beyond normal limits. But to risk your life b/c of the venue??? That just seems nuts.

also factor in that many come from locations that do not have the health standards of North America and Europe. Then the mystique of the Olympics, especially is "lesser" sports; many athletes fear they will never get another shot. Finally, there is the whole indestructibility of youth.

The chances of an Olympic athlete being infected by a superbug are slim and none. If I were an athlete, I wouldn't hesitate to go in the water there. In fact, I did go in the water in Rio last December. As a Midwesterner, I was more worried about sharks which I'm sure the locals would have found amusing.

They should probably be more concerned about common STDs they will likely encounter during the darker hours in Olympic Village. At least they've been given fair warning…

Erik Heil has already contracted a flesh eating bacteria from the waters in the bay during time trials sailings last August .
7% of rowers and sailors got sick last August at trials. There's no reason to believe those numbers won't be any different this year.
