How long has it been since Circuit City had Macs? - SteveJobs - 09-25-2006

CC, and BB (Best Buy) seem to have this on-again, off-again love affair with Apple computers.

Wonder how long this will last again.

I bought my first Mac from Office Max, back when both they and Office Depot had them. I used their 125% (or whatever it was) price BEAT policy to get it.

I wonder if Staples/OM/OD will once again carry some Macs?

Heck, I remember seeing an all-in-one (AIO) type Mac at Wal-Mart. (5400 I think)

The last time they had them here I believe the top of the line was a G3 / 600 DV iMac
and they were "clearing them out" at full price.

Sears had gotten out the year before and I nabbed a iMac 400 DV for about 60% of the going price
because it was their last one in the box and they were having one of those get another
15% off for using your sears card deals.

I bought my daughters first MAC from Sears...a performa450 DT. She was starting her business about 15 yrs ago (I think that is the time frame) and Sears was closing out macs.....good little machine for her first mac

I bought a blueberry iBook from Sears. It malfunctioned and Sears just swapped out like it were a food processor. I loved that. It was just a "unit" to them.

Yeah, but sears' REGULAR prices on Macs were $100 HIGHER thank the Apple MSRP. Then, the SALE price would drop that down. I never liked that much.

Man those were some tough times....

I was a Apple Retail rep back then (around 2000/2001 or so) when BOTH Sears and Circuit City carried Macs. It was like two different worlds.

At Sears you had the "technology clueless" who thought the 233 iMacs and Blueberry iBooks were Kids toys and NOT real computers. The iBooks did attract kids. At least once a month, i would have to order and replace a Keyboard because a unsupervised Kid banged the sh!t out of the keyboard and broke one or more keys. Sears employees were more Mac friendly than Circuit City because Sears/Apple offered better Spiffs on the Macs.

Circuit City was tougher because you had a "slightly" more informed consumer but more choices and the "Megahertz Myth" was in full effect then...

Seems that most of the Mac displays were right across from the cheapest eMachines package. You had a 400mhz iMac with minimal Ram and a CD-rom for $1299 while right across the aisle was a 800mhz eMachine, double or more of Ram with a CD-RW for about $499 after rebates.

Apple helped sell a lot of Wintel computers due to those high prices back in the day.

Yeah, bought my first Mac at CC, a Performa 405 (LC II). It seems every five years or so they sell them again, along with BB. Then they abruptly stop. I don't expect this cycle to ever change. Ditto the Sears comments.

ArtP: but Apple also had a $699 iMac back then, too. Well, during some of that time. Today's cheapest iMac is $999. Mac mini + Apple LCD is very pricey.

I thought the $699 iMacs were a great deal. Still have one used everyday. I bought three imacs back then. Then an eMac, and now a new G5 iMac.

If I remember right Apple never made a $699 iMac that I can remember as an initial release REGULAR price unless it came after the Airport based Macs. Maybe yours was discounted by the retailer or Edu pricing?

The cheapest one I remember was around $799 or so around the Rip, Mix Burn era. It was a low end without a CD burner.

Let me check everymac.com, I could be wrong.

EDIT: Cheapest one I found was the Indigo 350 @ $799.00
Introduction Date: July 19, 2000 Discontinued Date: February 22, 2001
Original Price: $799 US

What model is your?

I bought my first iMac at a close out sale at CC in 2001.
