I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - samintx - 09-26-2006 This has happened twice. "updates" from Msft...they let you reject or say yes..but I turned my computer off before I saw it would install the automatic "updates" when I turned off the machine......and it seems a scam to buy Office....because It installed a whole new Explorer-- which I did not like-- and some Office graphics I didn't like then saying "trial Office had expired do you want to buy it?" but the elaborate Office Outlook Express was there and was not going away... So again, fortunately "restored" my computer back to Saturday when it was simple and the old Outlook Express. I really like that feature with a PC of being able to "restore" back to a date and not have to live with updates. While on the subject......can you just install EXCEL from the OFFICE software like you can with the mac? Custom install? I don't care about anything except WORD and EXCEL in Office. Re: I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - ztirffritz - 09-26-2006 What version of Windows are you running Sam? Win98? IE has not been updated in about 4 years, and IE7 isn't scheduled for release until later this year or early next year with Vista. So if you're using Win98 it is possible that it tried to update to a new version of IE, but if you were able to roll back to a previous version that tells me that you're using XP, which means that you must be mistaken about IE being a new version. They release service packs for IE periodically, but I don't think any have been released for IE since XP SP2 was released. As for Outlook Express, you should avoid that like the plague. Use Thunderbird if you need a light weight mail app. Re: I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - Harbourmaster - 09-26-2006 Get yourself a TIME MACHINE! ![]() Re: I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - samintx - 09-26-2006 The "updates" tried to update OFFICE which also has the mail program in it. I'm running XPSP2. I like Outlook on the PC but maybe I'll try Thunderbird. I use it on my mac....(TBird) Re: I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - dotman - 09-26-2006 I moved a PC based business using outlook express with identities for multiple users over to thunderbird. It can import each identity. Did it for the spam filter and they really like it. dot. Re: I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - JoeH - 09-26-2006 IE 7 is already being offered in auto-updates from MS. Friend got it on his laptop last week running XP. That broke Outlook for him. he had to deinstall IE 7 and revert back to 6.1. As for installing just Word and Outlook, the older Office Installer had a custom option to just install parts of the suite. Not familar with the current version installer, but no reason it should not be buried there somewhere. Re: I love my PC laptops but this makes me mad ! - Racer X - 09-26-2006 It took over 20 minutes for my Dull craptop at work to boot up today. I too got the cartoon Outlook without my previous permission. |
