Video files won't open. Why? - DP - 09-08-2016

I've been using my Monoprice GoPro knockoff and while I've had some issues with figuring it out, I've thought I got it finally. But yesterday I was using it as a dash cam and I thought all was well but I get these thumbnails:

I don't know what the .thm files are but I open the MP4's. The FILE0457.mp4 plays fine. But the next file shows FILE0458.mp4 as a folded-corner icon and it doesn't open. I use VLC or QT 10 which works fine otherwise but neither works for this file. I don't get a corrupted file notice. QT says simply that it can't open it and nothing happens at all when I try to open it in VLC.
So, why is the icon different and why won't it open? I checked Info and it shows everything as normal.

How big are the 458 files? I suspect not very big, as if there is no data.

What files are supposed to be produced by that camera?

When I make a movie with my Sony camcorder, I get several files within the ACVHD (or whatever it is), and only one has video and sound. The other(s) are directories or thumbnails or whatever that are useless for my purposes, and I ignore them.

I have a feeling the file is corrupted. No doubt you have tried downloading another copy without having better success. Good luck.

3.28 GB. mp4.
The "thm" file doesn't open but shows 140.4 MB. The 0458 should be like the 0457, showing a image thumbnail too. I got a feeling it got corrupted somehow as the 0457 opens and plays just fine.

Have you tried simply renaming the files?

I occasionally get a wacky mp4 file and just renaming it from File.MP4 to newel.MP4 (or M4V) will make it readable.
