Can the new 24" iMac match the new Mac Pro in High-Res Gaming? - Harbourmaster - 09-26-2006 If you buy the 256MB nVidia 7600 GT upgrade card when you order your iMac it looks like the answer is YES! http://www.barefeats.com/imcd4.html I don't think so... - RAMd®d - 09-26-2006 ...unless you qualify the stats. Out of the box, the answer may be yes, but there will always be better video cards. I'll check the link to see if it answers my question- does the 256MB card give respectable gaming performance, whether or not compared to other computer? F'rinstance, I've got Close Combat: First to Fight, based on a preview at MWSF a few years ago. It was demoed on G5s with some high end ATi card, don't remember which. Played fast, smooth, and gorgeous. Detail, shading, reflections, glints-- all stunning. Playing it on my 1.25MHz/1.5G MDD with an ATi 9600, not so much (obviously). It didn't look any better than an old Tomb Raider game on my Cube. Played smooth, though. If I could find a 24"/256MB iMac at an Apple Store, I'd be tempted to ask them if I could load the game to check it out. Re: Can the new 24" iMac match the new Mac Pro in High-Res Gaming? - vision63 - 09-26-2006 I can't get my Medal of Honor and Spearhead games to load up on my new Intel iMac even with the latest patches. They're supposed to run fine in Rosetta, but doesn't work for me. Re: Can the new 24" iMac match the new Mac Pro in High-Res Gaming? - Silencio - 09-26-2006 BareFeats has some thoughts -- er, benchmarks -- on the subject: http://www.barefeats.com/imcd4.html Re: Can the new 24" iMac match the new Mac Pro in High-Res Gaming? - Harbourmaster - 09-26-2006 [quote Silencio]BareFeats has some thoughts -- er, benchmarks -- on the subject: http://www.barefeats.com/imcd4.html Um, is this not the exact link that I have in my original post!? Re: I don't think so... - RAMd®d - 09-26-2006 Um, er- are these the same benchmarks that were in the very first post? Are these benchmarks different from the ones that don't apply in my scenario of a future upgraded card? Of course my qualification remark would be out the window is Apple offers a new card for the iMac at some future date. Assuming that's even possible, of course. Re: Can the new 24" iMac match the new Mac Pro in High-Res Gaming? - Silencio - 09-26-2006 You know, I hate it when I get stuck in "answer mode": everything begins to look like a question to me. ![]() Re: I don't think so... - Harbourmaster - 09-26-2006 [quote RAMd®d]Um, er- are these the same benchmarks that were in the very first post? Of course my qualification remark would be out the window is Apple offers a new card for the iMac at some future date. Assuming that's even possible, of course. Although possible, It seems unlikely that Apple will offer Video Card upgrades for these iMacs after the fact, due to the relativley small number of potential upgraders at any given time. Re: Can the new 24" iMac match the new Mac Pro in High-Res Gaming? - Silencio - 09-26-2006 Well, I wish they had the GPU options on the 20" iMac, as well. Those benchmarks pretty much show just how lousy the GeForce 7300GT really is. Re: I don't think so... - Jp! - 09-26-2006 I have loaded Medal of Honor: Spearhead at the apple stores. They say the don't care since every Mac is reimaged nightly, so it will be wiped that night. [quote RAMd®d]...unless you qualify the stats.
