Best current deal on G4 iBook 12" Combo? - Markintosh - 09-26-2006
My wife killed hers with a coffee spill yetserday. It sat for at least 5 minutes before anyone noticed, then it was another hour before she brought it to me still dripping.
It's pretty much toast. Belongs to the her school...hence the desire to get a deal on a comparable machine.
Apple refurbs are at $799. Anything better out there (not including the G3 iBook deals at OWC)?

The school probably leases those iBooks, or keeps track of serial numbers. I wouldn't try and pull a fast one on them and just swap it out with a new iBook. I'm sure the school has procedures for having that one repaired or replaced. I would just have her turn it in to them.

I believe the speed is around 1.25 gig but not sure.
C(-)ris - They are not a lease, they were purchased outright in bundles of 10. As far as pulling one over on the District, well I'm #2 tech guy in the District so it's too late for that. My wife just feels like it was totally her fault and wants to make it right ASAP. She needs a laptop to function. Turning it over to the District would involve at least a 30 day delay for paperwork.

Are you absolutely sure it's dead? A good wash and a 24-36 hour dry off in a warm area with it opened up to the air could bring it back. Has been known to happen.

Yeah....the report from my wife was sizzles and smoke that caught her attention.
Life VERY busy right now. Easier to fix the problem with money.
Then part out on eBay later.

Try asking for any refreshed models from your local Apple Store, assuming you have a local Apple Store. My mother got one of the last generation 12" iBooks for $619 out the door about 4 months ago. 1.33GHz combo drive, nice unit. Was missing the VGA out adapter, but I got one shipped for $10.
