Installing Parallels-can't use my prior copy of Windows XP from Virtual PC? - KrisKT - 09-26-2006

I just got Parallels. Am I really going to have to buy another copy of Windows XP?

I deleted Virtual PC off the computer. I have the install discs of Virtual PC which included Windows XP home plus I have the activation key. I ALSO have another copy of Windows XP on the install discs (with an activiation key) for a Toshiba laptop computer that we don't use anymore.

But since these are not free standing Windows install discs, what can I do?

I REALLY don't see the need to give Bill Gates any more of my money!

Any ideas?

Well, you can probably bet those copies to install. Or at least download a copy, install it and use the key from one of those.

However, there's a 99% chance your license for each of those is only good when used either on VPC or on the toshiba laptop.

How so? When someone buys VPC with Windows, they are purchasing a license to use Windows on VPC. When they purchase an OEM PC bundled with Windows, they are purchasing a license to use Windows on that hardware.

If someone has purchase a license to use Windows on any one system, they could put it on VPC, the intel Mac, a toshiba laptop...

Ah, for the wild and wooley days of operating systems....when you could decide for your very own self WHICH of your computers to install an OS on, and didn't have to call and get permission to switch computers....

Oh, wait... that's why I use Macs...

(and why I'm fighting the Windows "Activation" battle on PC's at another site... all have legal OEM Win XP cd's that came with 'em... and they STILL won't "activate"...)
