The ghettos - Lemon Drop - 10-28-2016

the guy doesn't get around much, cut him some slack....

"... in Toledo, the GOP nominee may have undercut his minority outreach with a 1970s-era slip of the tongue, reports CBS News chief White House correspondent Major Garrett.

“We’re going to work on our, the ghettos -- are in so, the, you take a look at what’s going … We’re going to work with the African-American community, and we’re going to solve the problem of the inner city,” Trump said."

He gets the coloreds, he does.

Re: The ghettos - bfd - 10-28-2016

Maybe he's just trying to go "ghetto" now that he's sure to lose the race.

Re: The ghettos - hal - 10-28-2016

Is the use of ghetto now verboten?

I honestly don't understand the problem with using this word.

noun: ghetto; plural noun: ghettoes; plural noun: ghettos

1. a part of a city, especially a slum area, occupied by a minority group or groups.

Re: The ghettos - rjmacs - 10-28-2016

It's use in the absence of acknowledging its racially charged meaning is generally considered insensitive. Verboten might be a bit strong, but it's become less popular as people have wanted to pretend that minorities have just ended up in these areas by happenstance, or because of some inherent inferiority lodged in their blood or culture.

There's also the fact that "inner cities" are actually thriving in a lot of places, and so are black communities.

The most troubled places now are outside of cities.

Ditto.

Re: The ghettos - hal - 10-28-2016

I read that before I posted...

I get a bit tired of words that are being used properly, but have been deemed as carrying a bad connotation.

I have a good friend that HATES it every time I use the word 'hate'. (eyes rolling). I find all of this to be in the same category as Participant ribbons.

So is there a word to replace ghetto that means the same as ghetto and if so, why is THAT acceptable?
