because "System Administrator is using it."

iMac, OS 10.9.

Closed all programs, same result—system admin using it.

Next-to-last resort: told it to restart. Still nothing.

Held down power button to shut it down.

It restarted OK, & ext drive appeared on desktop. Ext drive then could be ejected.

What's the business about "System Administrator is using it," and what's a good way to get around it?

Do you have a user account called "System Administrator?"

Re: Couldn't eject external drive - clyde - 02-08-2017

It's called kent's iMac 21, Admin, and I'm kent

You were more patient than I.
I would have just unplugged it while restarting... but followed by a disk repair, of course.

Was Spotlight perhaps doing something with it?

Used Disk Utility to verify disk—result: Disk OK.

Disk repair necessary? If so, why?

Re: Couldn't eject external drive - rich in distress - 02-08-2017

Not necessary, since DU verify returned OK.
I need to shake old habits off, and get some new ones I guess.
In .6.8, restarting and going to applejack was dead easy. I still don't know the equivalent in Sierra...

Restart fixes 99.99% of most things...

I don't know what question you answered, but it wasn't mine.

The drive could not safely be ejected because it was in use.

Usually, you'll see a message similar to this: "The disk [Disk Name] could not be ejected because one or more programs may be using it."

If you see a notification that the can't be ejected because user-x is using it, that indicates that a second user account on your Mac is accessing one or more files on the drive. This can occur with Fast User Switching enabled and multiple users logged in at the same time.
