Men and Women that fish - vision63 - 02-08-2017
The most diverse collection of humanity I've observed in my life, that function in harmony, are the men and women that fish in popular fishing spots. This is kind of like a Bicentennial Minute.

Good observation. It's always a pleasant walk out on my local fishing pier (lots of dungeness crab fishing now).
I'm sure hostilities happen but a lot less frequently than in other human activities.

So true, and thanks for sharing. I recall fishing at a lake in north central Ohio. All hues and clothing, and three Amish families having a great time pulling in lots of bluegills and catfish. I had a nice conversation with the Grossfater in German. We laughed and told each other fishing stories. (Lies involving water)

I can't say that my observations are the same. When traveling the rivers and wetlands around here I see LOTS of fishermen. 90% men - most women I see are there with their man and not fishing themselves. Also most that I see (except the seasonal salmon fishermen) are very poor, immigrants and look like they are fishing for dinner - not sport.
The more touristy zones fit closer to your description - families out for a fun day or couples both fishing, but when I get out there it's 90% immigrant men who are serious about getting some food (or in the case of sturgeon fisherman - GOLD!)
To me, 'The most diverse collection of humanity I've observed in my life' can be found waiting in line at the DMV. At least back before the internet - EVERYONE had to go to the DMV to get their biz done. You'd see men in fancy suits next to guys in baggy pants falling below the waistline. Women in business suits next to women in tank tops.

Lotsa women fish in the Bay Area. Especially Asian women. The Berkeley Pier was an amazing place to be. They've closed it since it's crumbling which I find extremely sad. No greater pleasure than walking out on that pier.

Pretty much by definition people who fish have patience. That usually means they are thoughtful, something that is fast become rare amongst the rest of the population.
