DISHNet HD question - vicrock - 12-12-2005

Long time subscriber to Dish - looking to upgrade to HD TV either before or after Christmas - the Dish site is gawdawful - has anyone done this? Options for receivers, need for new dish? Costs?

This year we bought a Sony Wega 50 inch HDTV for the bedroom (wife spends much time there as she is handicapped) and had a Model 811 HDTV receiver added to our account. It cost $50 installation, an additional $4.95 a month for having a second receiver, and an additional $4.95 a month for rental of the 811 receiver. Later in the year, we bought a 60 inch Sony Wega HDTV for our den/TV room. I called DishTV to replace our non-HDTV receiver with a second 811. I was told that the second 811 had to be purchased at a cost of $450 or $495, I don't remember which. Instead I bought an 811 from an eBay auction for $225. I don't recall for sure, but I think the only additional cost for service for the second HDTV receiver is $4.95 per month. When buying a satellite receiver from an eBay seller, you have to be careful that the contract under which it was acquired has been fulfilled.

I have an HD set with a Dish PVR, but no HD. The web site DOES suck big time. I thought you had to purchase an HD receiver, no rental. glad to hear one can rent. I think I'll call my local installer and try to work through with them instead of calling Dish. That's how I did it when I got the PVR.

Does anyone know if the HD receiver is also a PVR? I couldn't live without that...well I guess I could...

They do have one the 942 that is a HD PVR - price is obscene - lists for over $700!

I saw that. No rental deal yet? I'm thinking of switching to DirecTV
