He's baaaaack... - pdq - 04-12-2017 ![]() Stunning Iran and disregarding the words of its supreme leader, former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad registered Wednesday to run in the country's May presidential election and upended a contest largely expected to be won by its moderate incumbent. While I personally think this would be a disaster, and the Supreme Leader and his (religious) ruling council may not actually allow him to run, it brings up a point that I thought was largely missed before. Which is, the political fates of the extremists like Ahmadinejad are closely linked with the (largely) anti-Iranian right in the US. I remember (or at least think I do) when Ahmadinejad was first running, on the eve of the Iranian election, Bush came out with a ton of negative rhetoric about how horrible Iran and Ahmadinejad were...and (I thought) this was a big boost for Ahmadinejad among Iranians which helped him get elected. And in return, the presence of Ahmadinejad helped prop up Bush. It wasn't until after a couple of years of no-drama Obama that Iran was happy to move back to moderates. Now we've bombed Syria, an Iranian ally. And Ahmadinejad announces days later. Coincidence? I doubt it. Re: He's baaaaack... - DeusxMac - 04-12-2017 "I'm a dinner jacket" |
